DEFINITION

Dried seed ofStrychnos nux vomicaL.

Content: minimum 1.2 per cent of strychnine (C 21 H 22 N 2 O 2 ;M r 334.4) deter- mined on the dried drug.

IDENTIFICATION

A. Nux vomica seed is discoid, about 20-25 mm in diameter and 5 mm thick, with a slightly swollen edge. It is not quite flat, one side being slightly convex, the other slightly concave. Some seeds are irregularly curved. The seed is light grey to greenish-grey in colour and has a satin- like appearance due to a silky pubescence consisting of dense hairs which radiate from a central point on either side of the seed. There is a radial ridge linking the protuberant hilum in the centre of the seed to the slightly protuberant micropyle on the side of the seed. The seed mainly contains horny, grey albumen. The small embryo located in the central cavity possesses two 5-6 mm long c otyledons. The radicle is curved towards the micropyle. Take all necessary handling precautions when reducing the toxic drug to a powder.
