In the context of its work programme for 1985, the European
Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions
undertook a study of the impact of biotechnology on living and
working conditions.
This study set out to analyse the state of research in this sector, to
identify the main trends and possible developments of biotechnology in
a medium-term perspective, and to provide factual and evaluative
resources which could assist further detailed studies.
What was involved, therefore, was a preliminary and investigative type
of analysis which was carried out by means of the survey of existing
literature on the subject.
With a view to accommodating the multiple and interdependent nature
of the various aspects of the problem in question, an "integrated"
approach was adopted, and implemented through a study of four key
areas by four research teams or individuals, who worked in close
co-operation and harmony.

biotechnology on society Gert Junne, Jos Bijman and Kees van den Doel - Vakgroep
Internationale Betrekkingen en Volkenrecht, Universiteit van
Amsterdam, Netherlands: The international dimension of
biotechnology in agriculture
A summary report, drawn up by Dr Yoxen, completes these studies.
Documentary support and research were provided by the British
Library's EBIP (European Biotechnology Information Project), United
Kingdom.
The findings of the research were examined and approved at an
evaluation meeting held in Brussels on 27 February 1987.
It should be emphasised that the authors of the reports are solely
responsible for the analyses and opinions contained in this document.
