Treatment of multiple missing teeth in adults with rare diseases by using implant-supported denture     Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS), Saint-Denis La Plaine, France Author : Françoise SAINT-PIERRE, MD PhD     Aim To assess the clinical value of procedures for treating adults with dental agenesis due to rare genetic diseases in order to advise French National Health Insurance (NHI) on the reimbursement of these procedures. The present asse ssment was carried out within the framework of the Rare Diseases Programme set up by the French Ministry of Health and Solidarity.  Conclusions and results Rehabilitation with removable implant-supported denture is a good alternative to conventional denture for treating multiple dental agenesis. Implant-supported dentures have considerable functional, aesthetic and psychological advantages over conventional dentures. In these specific genetic syndromes the safety and efficacy of surgical and prosthetic procedures depend on interdisciplinary management, which is decisive for successful treatment outcomes.   Recommendations (if any) HAS’ opinion is that these procedures should be reimbursed. For pre-implant surgery of atrophic jaws, HAS recommends critical assessment of the need and the appropriate type of bone or soft tissue augment ation procedure involving less risk of complications.    Methods Critical analysis of the clinical data published fr om 01/2000 to 10/2010 obtained from a document search of the MEDLINE and Cochrane Library databases. 21 case series (syndromal agenesis), 19 systematic reviews, 3 guidelines and 5 technology reports (implant rehabilitation of edentulous patients) were analysed. The results of this analysis were discussed by a multidisciplinary working group consisting of 8 odo ntologists and 3 maxillary surgeons. Conclusions have been reviewed by the Commission d’Evaluation des Actes Professionnels (CEAP), the HAS specialised appraisal committee.
