An exceptional apothecary jar with the effigy of Saints Cosmas and Damian.
This Italian 16th century drug jar, of double-handled ovoid form, is the only one of its type with such decoration so far discovered. The two patron saints of pharmacy and medicine, Cosmas and Damian, are represented with their traditional attributes, but they are accompanied by a vase bearing the word Medici and an inscription : Nos Arabes adiviqve simvl bona p(h)armaca abemus. The author questions the sense of the word adiviqve. He reminds that another type of drug jar with the effigy of the two saints is known (a double-bulb albarello). He stresses the importance of this newly-discovered apothecary jar in the history of religious worship and in the professional iconography of these two saints.
Ein aussergewöhnliches Apothekengefàss mit dem Bildnis der heiligen Kosmas und Damian.
Dieses eiförmige Gefäss des 16. Jts, mit zwei Henkel, ist das Einzige bis Heute gemeldete mit dieser Austattung. Die zwei heiligen Beschützer der Medizin und der Pharmazie Kosmas und Damian sind darauf mit ihren herkömmlichen Kennzeichen dargestellt, aber mit einem Gefäss begleitet welches den Vermerk Medici trägt und eine wie folgt konzipierten Inschrift : Nos Arabes adiviqve simvl bona p(h)harmaca abemus. Der Verfasser befragt sich über den Sinn des Wortes adiviqve. Er erinnert daran dass man nur eine andere Gefässart mit dem Bildnis der zwei Heiligen kennt (Albarello mit Doppelwulst). Er unterstreicht die Bedeutung des neu entdeckten Gefässes für die Geschichte des Kults und der Berufsikono- graphie dieser Heiligen.
