Description
This paper discusses research involving the analysis of articles in the local press (Loire-Atlantique) on a trivial event and comparisons of institutional discourses: security discourse followed by consensual, compassional discourse suited to the occasion. We studied the dual character of the news item, its editing in the frame of press/police and pressЛaw relations, and showed that written reporting on the brief news item, in its mode of production, is strongly marked by police and legal power, the hierarchy and readership. Moreover, because it is a routine, it affords the profession a less dogmatic, a-technical dimension, and shows journalism's intrinsic inability to reconcile the two versions of the same story.
