The practical work forming the basis of this PhD thesis was mainly carried out at the Institute
of Technical and Macromolecular Chemistry (ITMC) of Aachen University of Technology
(RWTH) and the German Wool Research Institute (DWI) at the RWTH Aachen under
guidance of Professor Dr. Martin Moeller and Professor Dr. Doris Klee during the period
from July 01, 2004 to July 30, 2008. I thank both, Professor Dr. Martin Moeller and Professor
Dr. Doris Klee for the brilliant guidance, the interesting subject, and the freedom while
completing this thesis as well as in choosing cooperation network.
I would like to thank especially those coworkers without whom this thesis would not have
been possible. Special thanks to Dr. Paul D. Dalton and Kristina Klinkhammer for the melt-
electrospinning of PCL in chapter 3, Ibrahim Hassounah for help with melt-electrospinning of
polypropylene in chapter 3, Martin Rosenthal for the WAXD and SAXD experiments in
chapter 4, Robert Loesel for the support (synthesis and electrospinning experiments during his
diploma thesis) in chapter 7, and Karl-Heinz Heffels, Peter Gasteier and Dr. Jürgen Groll for
sharing the experimental work and planning of chapter 8, and last but not least I would like to
thank Tino Schreiber for his practical and scientific support. Professor Dr. Dimitri A. Ivanov
is acknowledged for providing the opportunity to accomplish the practical work regarding the
XRD and SAXS investigations at the Beamline 26 at ISRF facilities in Grenoble. Here, I
would like to thank the following people without whom this work would not have been
possible:
I gratefully acknowledge valuable advice and support during the everyday laboratory life and
the permanent disposition for discussion especially provided by Dr. Paul D. Dalton, Dr.
Jürgen Groll, Dr. Helmut Keul, Dr. ―Sacha‖ Xiaomin Zhu, Dr. Helga Thomas, Dr. Jochen
Salber, Dr Barbara Dittrich, Mr. Peter Gasteier, Mrs. Birgit Penkert, Mrs. Petra Ampen, Mrs.
Júlia Lleixà Calvet, Mrs. Kristina Klinkhammer, Mr. Robert Lösel, Mr. Ibrahim Hassounah,

Schmitz, Mrs Wiebke Voigt, Mr. Ralf Krüll, Mr. Jörg Heinrichs, Mr. Karl-Heinz Heffels,
Mrs. Alexandra Goldyn and Mrs. Angela Plum. All co-workers of the ITMC and the German
Wool Research Institute (DWI) at the RWTH Aachen are acknowledged for their
cooperativeness and for providing a comfortable working atmosphere and perfect working
conditions.

I would like to acknowledge the DFG Graduierten Kolleg 1035 ―Biointerface‖ and like to
thank all participants for the interesting insights into the various different topics as well as the
interdisciplinary team work. Prof. Dr. Thomas Kissel and Dr. Erik Rytting - for supervising
the chapter on charged polymer and drug release, giving me the chance to participate at the
GRC on Drug-Delivery and editing the manuscript, Dr. Dimitri A. Ivanov and Mr. Martin
Rosenthal- for writing the simulation and interpretation of the x-ray scattering (WAXS and
SAXS), Professor Dr. Claus-Micahel Lehr, Dr. Michael Bur and Mr. Andreas ―Andi‖
Henning - for the Discussions and work clearance mechanisms after pulmonary deposition,
Dr. Michael Krüger and Dr. Regis Cartier of Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma GmbH & Co.KG
for the interesting discussions, the insights into pharmaceutical industry and the coordination
of the ―NanoInhale‖ project, Dr. Thomas Schmehl and Dr. Thomas Gaessler - for the fruitful
discussions, Dr. Helga Thomas - for the good communication and discussions on
electrospinning. I would like to acknowledge all the cooperation partners, especially from the
NanoInhale‖ project whom I forgot mention. I would like to thank all other PhD students
involved in these projects for the nice and friendly atmosphere.
I am grateful for the financial support of the research presented in this thesis to the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft for the DFG Graduierten Kolleg 1035 ―Biointerface‖, the
Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung for the BMBF project 13N8888 „NanoInhale
- Nano-Carrier mit zeitlich und örtlich gesteuerter Freisetzung von Wirkstoffen zur
Inhalation―, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen "Otto von
Guericke " e.V. for the two projects AIF 14263N „Nanofaservliese für die Therapie von
I am very thankful to all my friends, especially Martha Rygula, Andreas Bürger, Alexander
Hack, Pascal Schäfer, Sven Englert, Michi und Markus Willenberg, Holger Weist, Thorsten
Hoffmann, Reyes Lopez Garcia, and all the others, who supported me in my private life.
Thank you very much! Special thanks to Paul ―Mono‖ Steinbusch for the coffee and endless
talks on life in general while the DWI was still located in the old building. And I am also very
grateful to my family for their enormous support.
Without the support of all of you this work would have been hardly possible.
I per acabar, voldria agrair a la meva companya Júlia Lleixà Calvet, amb qui comparteixo el
dia a dia, la seva estima, confiança i suport.
