ExperimenTrak Participant Tutorial

ExperimenTrak is the Psychology Department’s research participation
management system. This system allows to you do the following tasks online:
browse a list of currently available experiments (some of which are laboratory-
based studies, and some of which are online studies), schedule appointments to
participate in laboratory-based studies, cancel appointments to participate in
laboratory-based studies, check your list of scheduled appointments for
laboratory-based studies, participate in online studies, assign research credits to
particular courses in which you are enrolled, and check the number of credits you
have earned.

Before using ExperimenTrak, you must read and agree to the policies
described in the Participants’ Rights and Responsibilities document. You
are responsible for all the information described in the Participants’ Rights and
Responsibilities document, including the Psychology Department’s policies
regarding the receipt of positive credits for participation in experiments and the
receipt of penalty (negative) credits for failing to attend experiments without
canceling your participation appropriately (i.e., no-showing). In order to download
the Participants’ Rights and Responsibilities document, please click on the
following link:

http://www.nku.edu/~breitenbeche/participantrr.pdf

We recommend that you print a copy of the Participants’ Rights and
Responsibilities document for your records. After reviewing the participants’ rights
and responsibilities, please follow the instructions listed below.

Attention Minor Participants:
If you are less than 18 years old, you must obtain documentation of
the consent of your parent or legal guardian for you to participate in
studies listed on ExperimenTrak. Because such consent is difficult to
document in the case of online studies, you will not be permitted to
participate in online studies. (These online studies will not appear on the
Experiment List when you login to ExperimenTrak.) In the case of
laboratory-based studies, you must contact the researcher prior to your
scheduled appointment to obtain a hard copy of the consent form. Ask your
parent or guardian to review the document and indicate his or her consent
for you to participate by signing the form. Bring this signed consent form
with you to your scheduled appointment. If you are less than 18 years
old, and you do not bring such documentation of your parent or legal guardian’s consent to the scheduled appointment, you will not be
permitted to participate in the study.

THE FIRST TIME YOU USE EXPERIMENTRAK:

Go to the following URL:

http://nku.experimentrak.net

Registration
The first time that you use ExperimenTrak, you will need to register. (All
subsequent times that you use ExperimenTrak, you will only need to login.)
To register, go to the home page for ExperimenTrak (listed above).

Using the drop-down menu beneath PARTICIPANTS, choose REGISTER. You
will be taken to a new page. Make sure that the title of this page is
“Participant Registration.” (One of the most common mistakes made by
students is to inadvertently register as researchers because they have
mistakenly chosen REGISTER beneath the RESEARCHER drop-down menu.)

Enter the requested information into the appropriate fields. Please note that
you can use any email address; you do not need to use your NKU email
address. Also, please note that your password must be 6 or more
alphanumeric characters. In addition, you must check the YES box,
indicating that you have read and understand the Participants’ Rights and
Responsibilities document. When you have finished entering your
information, click SUBMIT REGISTRATION.

After you have clicked the SUBMIT REGISTRATION button, ExperimenTrak
will send you an email verification message to the email address that you
provided. Typically, this process happens almost instantaneously, but can
occasionally take longer (depending on how many people are using the
system at a given point in time). At this point in the process, if you wish,
you can quit your browser and return to complete your registration later.
Please note that you must receive your verification email before you can
complete registration.

Verification
Your verification email will describe two methods for completing your
registration.

Method #1 involves clicking on a link contained in the email and entering the
password that you provided earlier during registration. (Please note that
Method #1 may not work with AOL or Hotmail.) After entering your
password, click VERIFY & LOGIN.
Method #2 involves clicking on a different link (also provided in the email)
and entering your email address (the same one that you provided earlier
during registration), your password (again, the same one that you provided
earlier during registration), and your VERIFICATION CODE (a sequence of
numbers listed in your verification email). You may copy the VERIFICATION
CODE from your email and paste it directly into the relevant field on the
account verification page. After entering the appropriate information, click
VERIFY & LOGIN.

You may use whichever method you prefer. In either case, after you click
VERIFY & LOGIN, you will be taken to the PARTICIPANT LOGIN page. Enter
your email address and password and click LOGIN.

You will be taken to a screen that prompts you to respond to a brief series of
demographic questions. (If the response options listed for one or more of
the demographic questions do not include an appropriate category for you,
please contact the local ExperimenTrak administrator, Dr. Kim
Breitenbecher.) After answering the questions, click CONTINUE.

You will be taken to a page that displays a list of courses. These courses are
taught by instructors who have agreed to allow their students to earn
research credits through participation in studies listed on ExperimenTrak.
Please check the courses in which you are currently enrolled. Please
note that you can check more than one course. Also, please note that not
all psychology instructors allow their students to earn credit through
research participation. Check with your instructor to see if he or she allows
you to earn credit in this manner. If you do not see your desired course
listed on this page, please contact your instructor. He or she will need to
notify the ExperimenTrak administrator (Dr. Kim Breitenbecher), so that she
can add the appropriate course to the system. After checking the
appropriate course(s), click SUBMIT.

After completing this page, you will be taken to the ANNOUNCEMENTS
(main) page. This page includes the following links: EXPERIMENTS,
APPOINTMENTS, ACCOUNT, HELP, and LOGOUT. At this point, you have
completed your registration with ExperimenTrak. Your participant account is
now active.

Please be sure to LOGOUT when you have finished using ExperimenTrak.

ALL SUBSEQUENT TIMES THAT YOU USE EXPERIMENTRAK:

Go to the following URL:

http://nku.experimentrak.net
Participant Login
Enter the information required. You will be taken to the ANNOUNCEMENTS
(main) page. On this page, you will see the following links: EXPERIMENTS,
APPOINTMENTS, ACCOUNT, HELP, and LOGOUT.

Always LOGOUT when finished! The system includes an automatic logout for
inactivity, but this process is not fail-safe. Be sure you log out, especially
when using a public terminal, to prevent others from accessing your records.

Experiments
Click the EXPERIMENTS link. This page includes a list of experiments.
Please note that some of these experiments are laboratory-based studies.
In the case of a laboratory-based experiment, you will be expected to show
up for the study at a particular time and place to participate. Other
experiments are online studies. In the case of an online study, you will be
expected to respond to a series of questions online. An icon resembling the
front of a building indicates that the study is a laboratory-based study. An
icon resembling a lightning bolt indicates that the study is an online study.

If you are interested in participating in a study, click on that study to
select it.

Laboratory-Based Studies:
You will be taken to a page that provides additional detail about that
experiment, including a description of the study and any special eligibility
requirements. You will also see available sign up times. Choose a time
and click SIGN UP.

You will be taken to a new page. Please note that this page prompts you to
choose a course to which ExperimenTrak will assign your credit for the
study. The choice of courses available to you should include the psychology
courses you selected during registration with ExperimenTrak. Choose one of
these courses. (Remember, not all psychology instructors allow their
students to earn credit through research participation. Check with your
instructor to see
