Acknowledgement

The following work has been carried out during the period October 2003 to September 2006 at the
Organisch-Chemischen Institut of the Westfälischen Wilhelms Universität Münster under the
supervision of Prof. Dr. Richard Göttlich. Part of the work was also carried out at Justus-Liebig –
Universität Giessen.
This research work has been supported by “The NRW Graduate School of Chemistry, Münster” in
the form of a doctoral fellowship.

First of all, I would like to thank my research adviser, Prof. Dr. R. Göttlich, for the interesting topic
and the freedom he gave me for carrying out this work. Looking back, I feel I was pretty lucky that
Prof. Göttlich let me join his group. He knew that, I had little synthetic experience but still decided
to take me into his group. Learning synthesis from him, either in group seminar or in the lab was
one of the most valuable experiences I had in graduate school. He has offered his continuous advice
and encouragement throughout the course of this thesis. Over the more recent years, he has
continued to be role model, mentor, and friend to me. I also acknowledge him for making my all the
arrangement in Giessen as well as helping me to settle down here in a new place. Being a part of
Richards’s group has been a great honor. Although I am sad to be leaving, I am looking forward to
the future and will enjoy watching the lab develop during the upcoming years.

I thank my research advisory committee members Prof. Dr. G. Erker and Prof. Dr. N. W. Mitzel for
their interest in my research. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the member of the
graduate school, for arranging everything to start up in a new place.

Special thanks to Dr. H. Luftmann and Ms. Bärbel Wippich from Münster and Dr. Rocker and
Beatrix Toth from Giessen, of the mass department for their quick service and friendly discussion.
Dr. Klaus Bregender, Mrs. Karin Voß, Mr. Ingo Gutowski from Münster and Dr. H. Hausmann and
G. Stammler of the NMR department of Giessen are also acknowledged for excellent work and
friendliness.

I gratefully acknowledge Dr. Roland Frölich and Birgit Wibbeling of the X-ray department for very
quick measurements, kindliness and patience. Ms. Karin Gottschalk, Mrs. Doris Wingbermühle
(Münster) and Mr. Roland Meurer (Giessen) are also acknowledged for carrying out elemental
analyses.

Sincere gratitude to my undergraduate chemistry teacher Dr. Purnakala Samant without her help I
would have not been here. My roots as a researcher come from Dr. P. S. Parmeswaran at NIO-Goa
