 Treasures  Branch Updates > Premises > Staff  10-14  Notable Acquisitions > Visitors  15-18  2.     Took the initial steps to partner with the Computer Centre and the Registry to create a full-text database of faculty publications. 3.     Joined a consortium composed of the libraries at Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth and Middlebury College to obtain access to nearly 40,000 English language online books.  Provide needed physical facilities and technical infrastructure.  1.   Increased the areas of cooperation with the Computer Centre to improve the Libraries technical infrastructure. 2.   Improved infrastructure by upgrading older Sun Unix hosts with a new High Availability Sun E10K, and implementing an XML database manager. 3.     Upgraded equipment and software used by staff to provide services to users.  Support and empower Libraries staff so that they can function more effectively:  1. Appointed a team of staff members to review all Libraries training programs and to make recommendations for change. Report was completed and most recommendations have been implemented. 2. Conducted a host of staff training workshops employing local and international experts to teach traditional and IT skills.  Improve faculty and student access to traditional and IT based information resources.  1.     Created a totally new look and feel to the Libraries home pages, making them easier to use than ever before. 2.     Identified and evaluated the best of the my library  portals and software systems that permit readers to input their search terms once and have searches of multiple databases done all at the same time. The my library interface has been implemented. 3.     Dramatically increased the number of databases that could be accessed remotely using a new computer proxy server.  Provide user-friendly services employing the best technologies available.  1.     Implemented the ILLIAD online interlibrary loan document delivery system that permits readers to place their requests without physically going to the library and, in the case of periodical articles, receive what they want electronically.

Notes from the Librarian Dr Anthony W Ferguson  J  ucsotl uam ny*e awr asa geon,t itlmeyd  FoHcouws  is the Library doing these days? I thought that it might be useful to give an update. Since it is annual report time, I have been busy assembling information about the events of the past year and I thought I might share just a few highlights arranged in terms of how they fit into some elements of our Strategic Plan:  Expand the breadth and depth of available electronic and printed forms of information :  1.     Completed a successful one-year online reserves project involving the Main and branch libraries and are going forward with this service. The University of Hong Kong Libraries Service Standards  As mentioned in an earlier edition of Focus, the staff of the Libraries has been involved in developing a set of uniform service standards. With this issue of Focus we launch these standards.  Through these standards we outline our commitment to service quality. We also provide all library users with a clear understanding of the service levels they can expect from all sections of the Libraries. At the same time, and in order for us to successfully achieve the standards set, we describe the responsibilities that are placed on all library users.  The implementation of these standards will enable the Libraries to continue to define, develop and strengthen its service culture.  The full service standards can be read at  < lib.hku.hk/general/services/standards.html >
