Description
Secularization and transformation of religion
In the work of Ernst Troeltsch, the theme of « transformation of religion through the passage to modernity » plays a most important role. The two texts given by Troeltsch in 1906, which the present paper deals with, show that Troeltsch, at that time, had only partially analyzed the problems of « secularization » and « transformation », and had not yet formulated clear answers to them. These would only appear in his Social Doctrines of 1912, where he develops his thesis of the three stages of evolution and the three types : churches as institutions, sects as voluntary associations and mystique as the most intense expression of religious individualism.
