xAccording to the European Gas directive, all consumers will be free to choose their gas supplier from July 2007 onw ards xGas markets remain however subject to significant rigidities in many cases, often the result of the continuing lack of integration of national markets. Without crossborder competition, existing enterprises can easily protect their position xThe opening of the market and the level of competition is well developed in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Ireland, Italy and Spain xere registered in Germany and Italy, followedMost gas retailers w at a considerable distance by Spain and Poland xOften the retail market is still dominated by a couple of very large companies, except for Germany, Spain and the Netherlands.
