Analysis of Data This audit found that Gerrard Bown has been experiencing continual growth in emissions from 17.21 tonnes CO2e in its initial audit to 20.69 tonnes CO2e last reporting period to 42.69 tonnes CO2e in this audit. The largest growth experienced was from last reporting period to now, growing by 22 tonnes CO2e between 2007/2008 to 2008/2009. The major causes of this growth are the increase in electricity use, embodied emissions in the supply chain (assets and expenses) and flights undertaken. Electricity emissions remained relatively the same in the first two audits; however it experienced a significant growth since Gerrard Bown’s last reporting period. This significant growth represented a two-fold increase from 7.86 tonnes CO2e last reporting period to 16.73 tonnes CO2e in this audit. Gerrard Bown should seriously consider practical electricity reduction measures to lower this large spike in electricity use, some of which have been outlined in the initial NoCO2 audit report. Similarly, embodied emissions from Gerrard Bown’s supply chain experienced continual growth from both Assets and Expenses. Embodied emissions from Assets increased by more than a factor of 3 from 2.10 tonnes CO2e last reporting period to 7.19 tonnes CO2e in this audit, whereas embodied emissions from Expenses increased by 74.48% from 6.26 tonnes CO2e last reporting period to 10.93 tonnes CO2e in this audit. An increase in spending on business assets is to be expected with a growing company but Gerrard Bown should ask its suppliers what action they are taking to avert dangerous climate change and whether they are implementing energy efficiency measures. If supply chain items are purchased from carbon neutral businesses like those found within CRI’s Low Carbon Economy (www.LowCO2.com.au) then Gerrard Bown can grow while maintaining carbon neutrality and reduce the need to purchase offsets. Flight emissions from Gerrard Bown’s air travel also grew, increasing by 88.86% from 3.64 tonnes CO2e in the previous audit to 6.87 tonnes CO2e this audit. In addition, Staff Travel emissions slightly increased from 0.22 tonnes CO2e in the previous audit to 0.65 tonnes CO2e this audit despite Gerrard Bown experiencing a net decrease of one full time employee. This increase was mainly due to the fuel reimbursed by Gerrard Bown for work-related travel. Since Gerrard Bown was only able to provide data on the kilometres travelled and the cost of fuel reimbursed, the method used in calculating the emissions impact of staff travel was based on Gerrard Bown’s kilometre record. It was assumed that all the vehicles were petrol-driven, the vehicle size of the staff members that had their fuel reimbursed were the same as their answers to the travel survey completed last year, otherwise it was assumed that they drove a large car. The only emission category that experienced a reduction in emissions was from waste, which decreased by 47.86% from 0.60 tonnes CO2e in the previous audit to 0.31 tonnes CO2e this audit. ConclusionThis audit found that Gerrard Bown’s 2008/09 footprint was 42.69 tonnes of CO2e. This represents more than a two-fold increase in attributed emissions compared to last year’s audit. This increase in emissions was mainly due to Gerrard Bown’s electricity use, embodied emissions in its assets and expenses, and flights undertaken. During its certification Gerrard Bown has purchased 20.69 offsets to cover the 2008/2009 year, based on the audit using 2007/08 data. This audit found that its actual emissions were 42.69 tonnes CO2As Gerrard Bown has already purchased 20.69 offsets fore for 2008/09. the 2008/09 year, it needs to purchase 22 more offsets to cover the extra emissions for the 2008/09 year. The emissions for 2009/2010 are estimated as identical to 2008/2009, i.e. 42.69 tonnes CO2e. Tocover emissions for the 2009/2010 year, Gerrard Bown is required to purchase an additional 42.69 offsets to cover its expected emissions over this period. This will then bring the NoCO2 certification up to date. In late 2010 the emissions produced by Gerrard Bown over 2009/2010 will be calculated based on the actual data for this period. This footprint will be compared to the amount of offsets purchased over this period and at this point Gerrard Bown will either be required to purchase additional offsets or have left over offsets to carry forward to the next year.
