This publication includes both the texts of papers given and the
opening addresses and final conclusions of the experts' meeting held at
Rennes, France, from 20 to 22 November, 1985, on "Integrated Plant
Protection in Field Vegetables". It was organised jointly by the Commis
sion of the European Communities and by the International Organisation
of Biological and Integrated Control.
It contains forty contributions, divided into specific sessions,
which deal with very important crops such as cabbages, carrots, toma
toes, potatoes, beans and artichokes.
There is no doubt that vegetable crops, many of which are eaten
raw, deserve particular attention concerning the maximum reduction of
the use of pesticides, with the adoption of means and control strategies
against pests and diseases.
These strategies are based on the prediction of attacks, the know
ledge of tolerance thresholds, the selection of resistant cultivars, the
growing of intercalated crops and the use of parasites, predators,
microorganisms or other biological, cultural or bio-technical methods.
Close collaboration between researchers allows us to attain these
aims more quickly, as has been shown above all for the prediction of
attacks of pests based on the analysis of samplings performed for
several seasons in different countries using the same protocol.
It is also encouraging to note that integrated control methods have
gone beyond the laboratory and experimental field stage. It is applied
by vegetable cultivators, as especially in the growing of cauliflowers
and Brussel sprouts.
For a better knowledge of the ecology, behaviour and ethology of
pests new protection techniques are being explored, such as the use of
traps and sexual pheromones, and recourse to cultural methods.
Thirthy-four experts, from twelve countries and two international
organisations, took part in this meeting. They presented and discussed
the results of their research on vegetable crops, for efficient protec
tion against pests and diseases. They feel it is possible to put into
practice a correct application of integrated pest control, with safe
means, methods and strategies of intervention.
