The concept of slow virus diseases originated from the work of Björn
Sigurdsson and his colleagues in the 1930's and they constitute an important
group of diseases of both veterinary and medical interest. The slow virus
diseases of sheep, maedi-visna and pulmonary adenomatasis, were two of the
originals which lead to the concept. Today, they continue to play an
important role in the sheep industrv by reducing the performance of affected
animals and creating barriers to international trade of animals. In addition,
together with caprine arthritis-encephalitis, they offer valuable animal
models of human diseases, the relevance of which is underlined by the recent
demonstration of the genetic relationship of maedi-visna virus and HTLV-III,
the causal agent of human acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
This publication has drawn together papers presented at two workshops on slow
virus diseases of sheep and goats held in Reykjavik, Iceland in July, 1982
and Edinburgh, Scotland in September, 1983. It is not the intention of this
publication to provide general reviews of these diseases, but rather to high­
light the current and future areas of interest and research. Over twenty
research groups attended the two meetings and their papers represent an up-
to-date compilation of current work on these diseases, ranging from studies
of the epidemiology and control strategies to molecular analysis of the
viruses.
It is the organizers hope that these workshops and this publication will
stimulate future work that will lead to a better understanding of the
patogenesis of slow virus infections and hereby enable us to create a
strategy for control and eradication of the infections.
