The December 2004 cattle livestock surveys in the EU-25 show that the cattle population continues to fall slowly. Total numbers of cattle are 1.5% lower than in December 2003. The price of beef remains high, despite the changes from enlargement and the reform of the CAP.
Continuing declining stocks in 2004
The December survey estimates the total number of cattle in the EU-25 at 86.2 million. This represents almost 6.5 % of the world cattle population, which according to the FAO (FAOSTAT) totalled 1.33 billion animals in 2004. At national levels, changes ranged from -8.9% in Slovakia to +8.2% in Malta. France and Germany, the two largest cattle producers, recorded decreases of -1.2% and -2.6% respectively.

Gross indigenous cattle production also continued its downward trend. Production is estimated to be almost 30 million head for 2005, representing a decrease of 1.9 %. However, this is based on the number of animals slaughtered, which has been influenced by the reform of the CAP.
