Description

The Partition of Internat Tidal Motions in Knight Inlet, British Columbia Howard J. Freeland Institute of Ocean Sciences Sidney, B.C. [Original manuscript received 29 July 1973; in revised form 19 January 19841 ABSTRACT A reanalysis of 4 current-meter records taken from Knight Inlet, B.C., is presented. The data indicate that the interna1 tide in Knight Inlet at M2 frequency undergoes a substantial rejection near a sharp bend in the channel. This result conjbcts directly with a result obtained recently by Blackford and presented in this issue. 1 Introduction In a paper by Blackford (1984) in this issue an analysis of CTD data obtained at two locations in a fjord, Knight Inlet, on the B.C. mainland toast is presented. The analysis in Blackford (1984) describes the shape, nature and propagation characteris- tics of an intemal tide and concludes that the wave is largely progressive.,Presumably the intemal tide is generated by an interaction between the barotropic tide and the sill, as described by Blackford (1978), and radiates away from the sill. Since the wave observed ...
