ECSC Agreement No. 7210.KL/802
Summary
A wide ranging and detailed study has been made of some of the fundamenta
ferromagnetic domain features which determine the basic magnetic properties o
electrotechnical steel as well as its performance in service.
The work is based upon and is an extension of the work of Contract 621O.KL/8/801 s
that the two pieces of work form a continuum.
Measurements have been made of Barkhausen Noise, and the properties of domains a
related to surface features.
A detailed analysis of the dynamics of domain wall movement within small groups o
grains has been used to throw light on the influence of the effects of grai
boundaries.
The behaviour of electrotechnical steel in simulated service conditions in built-u
cores has been studied and the results of waveform analysis and flux distributio
patterns have been viewed alongside theoretical models aimed at simulating an
predicting core behaviour.
Supplementary studies of coating and magnetostrictive behaviour have also bee
carried out.
The general result is a considerable expansion of knowledge of the properties o
electrotechnical steels and the prime determinants of their behaviour.
It is expected that consideration of the results reported will enable the users an
designers of electrical machines to take a better and fuller advantage of on-goin
developments in the properties of electrotechnical steels in such a way that energ
saving can be achieved. 7210.KL/802
