Instant-Activity Kits
Classroom Suite
includes 30 instant-activity kits. Each
kit includes an Activity ready for students to use, a
Template ready for teachers to create additional similar
activities quickly, and a PDF file of this tutorial.
Fractions
The Fractions instant-activity kit includes the Fractions
Problems activity, the Fractions Template, and a PDF
file of this tutorial. You can find these components by
opening the Math Templates folder and then the
Fractions folder in the New area of
Classroom Suite
.
The Fractions Template can be used to create new
fraction problem sets. Students analyze the pictures on
each page in response to the problem on that page.
They enter fraction bars to respond to the problem.
Five backgrounds have been provided for this template.
In this tutorial, you will start by exploring the Fractions
Problems activity. Later in the tutorial, you will learn to
create customized addition activities, using the
Fractions Template.
Universal Design
The activities you create using the Fractions Template
and
Classroom Suite
are designed for all students,
including those with physical or cognitive disabilities.

Introduction
Create a Folder for Your New
Activities
When you use this template, you will be creating new
activities for your students to use. To organize these
activities, you will want to create your own folder in the
Activities area of
Classroom Suite.
1. At the Navigation Screen, click the Activities
button. Click the New Folder button on the right
side of the screen. A dialog box will ask you to
name the folder. Give it the name of one of your
classes (e.g., Mrs. Smith’s Class).
2. Open the Fractions Template (see page 3).
3. When you complete your work with the template
and click the Finish Activity button, the Save As
Activity dialog appears. Name your new activity,
select the folder in which you want to place your
work, and click OK. Your new activity will now be
available for you to assign to students.
This tutorial requires that you have installed
IntelliMathics 3
. Authoring features necessary

Part 1: Exploring the Fractions Problems Activity
Students read word problems, create a fraction bar to
show the answer to the question, and show the same
fraction in lowest terms.
Opening Fractions Problems
1. Sign in to
Classroom Suite
as a Teacher (see
Getting Started in the
Classroom Suite
binder). The
Navigation Screen displays.
2. Click the New button, if it is not already selected.
Open the Math Templates folder.
3. Open the Fractions folder and open Fractions
Problems. Fractions Problems displays.
Exploring Fractions Problems
The opening page of Fraction Problems includes a text
box explaining the activity, a tool bar at the top, two
sorting bins to hold fraction bars, and a Make Fractions
toolbar at the bottom of the page.
1. Click the green Directions button at the top of the
page to hear the text box read aloud.
2. Use the blue Next Page arrow to go to the first
problem in this activity.
3. Click the text box to hear the problem read aloud.
4. Click the Make Fraction button to insert a fraction
bar on the page. Drag the bar to the Fraction box.
5. Click the Increase Numerator and the Increase
Denominator buttons to make the fraction 2/4.
Notice that the fraction reads aloud with each
change you make.
6. Click the Make Fraction button again.Move the
second bar to the Fraction in lowest terms box.
Because the lowest term for 2/4 is 1/2, your work
on this page is complete.
7. Click the Check Work button. The gold star
indicates your answers are correct.
8. Use the Next Page button to view the remaining
pages in this activity. Make some incorrect answers
and click the Check Work button.
9. Close the activity without saving it.
Fractions Sports, in the Sports Mania Thematic
Unit, is a ready-to-use activity like Fractions
Problems, using the theme of Sports.
In the next part of this tutorial, you will learn to use the
Fractions template to create new fractions activities.
Note
The Fractions Template can be used to create a variety
of fraction problems. Three page layouts have been
provided, or you can create your own.
Opening the Fractions Template
1. From the Navigation Screen, click the New button.
2. Open the Math Templates folder.
3. Open Fractions and open the Fractions Template.
4. See the instructions on page 1 of this tutorial to
learn how to create a special folder to store the new
activities you make with this and other templates in
Classroom Suite
.
5. From the File menu, select Save As Activity. Save
your activity with a unique name, such as
Fractions Problems 2
. The activity will be saved
into the Activities folder.
Selecting a Page Layout
1. The Fractions Template opens with the same
sample problem that was on the first page of the
Fractions Problems activity. Several authoring
toolbars are available in the template. The Page
Layout toolbar at the bottom allows you to select
the style of problem you want to create.
2. Click the Yellow Authoring Instructions button to
view on-screen instructions. You can refer to these
instructions at any time while you work on your
activity, by clicking this button.
3. Click the blue Home button to return to page 1.
4. The Page Layout toolbar offers three choices:
Reducing Fractions, Addition Same Denominator,
and Addition/Change to LCD page layout.
5. Click the Addition Same Denominator button.
The status bar at the bottom right of the page
shows that you are now on page 4 of 6. This is
because each layout already exists as a page in the
template. Selecting one of the layouts actually
duplicates the page layout you have chosen and
moves you to that page.
Later in this tutorial, you will learn how to
remove unneeded pages.
In the next section of this tutorial, you will begin
creating problems and adding graphics to your new
activity.
