One of the aims of the general energy policy of the European Communities is
to ensure a sufficient and secure energy supply for the present and future
needs of its Member States. In this context, hydrocarbons play a very impor
tant role.
Hydrocarbons are at present the single most important source of energy,
since they are the most versatile and widely used. It is expected that their
importance will extend well into the next century and therefore it is essential
to provide for all those improvements which will extend their availability and
usefulness.
For this reason the sub-programme "Optimization of the production and
utilization of hydrocarbons" (within the Non-Nuclear Energy R&D Pro
gramme of the European Communities) is pursuing a number of R&D topics
aimed at the above-mentioned results. The sub-programme is implemented
by means of shared-cost R&D contracts.
To report on progress in the work carried out under this sub-programme,
the Commission of the European Communities organized this first Seminar
"Hydrocarbons: Source of Energy" held in Lyon (France) from 21-23
September, 1988, where all contractors of the sub-programme presented the
state of progress of their R&D projects.
These proceedings comprise all the papers presented at the Seminar,
include the introductory and general speeches and an extended summary of
the discussions at each session. They are published to accelerate dissemin
ation of the scientific information obtained so far, with the purpose of foster
ing the progress of research and of helping towards its ultimate application in
practical uses when the research phase is completed. INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR : HYDROCARBONS : SOURCE OF ENERGY
