Proceedings of the WORKSHOP ON WENDELSTEIN VII-X
Schloss Ringberg (near Lake Tegernsee, Bavaria), Federal Republic of Germany
18 - 20 March, 1987
1. The Wendelstein VII-X experiment, its characteristic properties regarding equilibrium, stability, transport
behaviour, the expected parameter range, and its dimensions are discussed.
2. Comparison is made between four different lines of modular stellarator configurations, resulting in the choice of
Helias-type configurations, from which the future large Garchingr experiment, Wendelstein, VII-X, will be
defined in an effort to combine systems having elevated stable beta values with those of vanishing bootstrap current.
3. Optimization studies for the Wendelstein VII-X configuration.
4. RAU, F., et al., Proceedings of the WORKSHOP ON WENDELSTEIN VII-X, Schloss Ringberg (near Lake Tegern
see, Bavaria), Federal Republic of Germany (1 volume).

• Decision on the Programme of IPP-Garching, 1981 - 1982 :
- W VII-AS : Demonstration of Basic Principles of an Advanced Stellarator
Immediate Definition Possible
- W VII-X : Further Optimization as Successive Step
Requires More Time and Better Tools
• Today :
- This Optimization is Successful
- Several Options Exist
- Concentration Required on One Line Procedure of Workshop
Four Options for W VII-X
Comparison of Properties :
- Coil Systems, Geometry, Fields and Forces
- Engineering Considerations for Construction
4
Considerations to Define WENDELSTEIN VII-X
Conlusions
Remarks on the Four Options for W VII-X :
- Computations are for Given Size and Field
- The Experiment W VII-X might have Differing Values
- The Present Considerations are still a First Approach of Tentative Nature
