EF/83/3 IEH Copyright of THE EUROPEAN FOUNDATION FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF LIVING
AND WORKING CONDITIONS, 1983

and Working Conditions, Loughlinstown House, Shankill, Co. Dublin,
Ireland. PREFACE
Since its creation the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living
and Working Conditions has been inter alia dealing with the subject of
work organisation in the framework of its research programme. In
particular the development of new forms of work organisation has bee
studied under the following aspects:
1) reducing the physical and mental stress of workers
2) job enrichment, modification of work content and motivation of workers
3) possibilities for the involvement of workers and their representatives
in the preparation, implementation and the supervision of new work
forms
4) impact on productivity and economic efficiency of the firm concerned.
This means that both aspects of humanization and profitability were
considered.
In order to enable the Foundation to compare the development in this field
on a European level an instrument for the collection of data has been
developed, namely the "Guidelines of the European Foundation (for the
systematic collection of data on new forms of work organisation)", which
appear at the beginning of this volume.
This instrument had then to be tested by scientific application. A group
of three research institutes in the Federal Republic of Germany, France
and Italy under the control of the Munich "Institut für sozialwissen
schaftliche Forschung" was asked to carry out this test on the basis of
material available from case studies. Furthermore a comparative
presentation of the major results of the case studies would highlight the
specific national factors of influence which despite all formal common
features of the cases have led to different developments in the various
countries.
This volume contains the "Guidelines", the German case studies as well as
the evaluation reports drawn up by representatives of trade unions,
employers and governments during a colloquium which took place in Dublin
on 24/25 June 1982. The case studies for the other countries, as well as
the comparative analysis, are also available and can be obtained
separately from the European Foundation.
On behalf of the Foundation the project was guided by Eberhard Köhler. In
accordance with scientific tradition the results submitted are however the
sole responsibility of the authors and research institutes. EUROPEAN FOUNDATION GUIDELINES
