Description
Abstract ~~From Primitive Art to First Art.~~ — At the start of the 20th century, the discovery of so-called primitive art shook Western culture. In defining its finalities, Western art encountered difficultes that prefigured the contradictions of European societies. In music, theater, literature and the arts, new problems arose; and where handled in new ways that challenged not only Western aesthetic theories but also museum practices. As non-European arts were admitted into Western aesthetics, how did the notion of primitive art turn into an artistic and museum concept? And how has this concept evolved into~~ arts premiers~~ (first arts)? What does this imply for museums in Africa?
