Description
SUMMARY One of the aims of the survey was the compilation of age-specific life tables by decade. Certain corrections were necessary : these, and the method of computation employed, are described in the first' part. The results which follow reveal two separate periods: from 1740 to 1789, the mortality rate is very high and relatively stable; from 1790-1799 on, it falls considerably and continues to do so until 1820-1829, independent at least in the beginning of any medical progress. If we examine the results obtained assuming under-registration of deaths 1) limited to children and 2) proportional at all ages, the latter hypothesis appears improbable.
