Description
The notion of resemblance in west africa Marianne Lemaire In West Africa, resemblance is thought of as a response to a problem of identification rather than as an extension of some hypothetical substantial identity among « relatives ». It is involved in the representation and réintégration of individuals having indeterminate status or displaying unusual behavior. In terms of kinship, resemblance is closely linked with death, either in the sense that it drives one of the look-alikes to death or insofar as it bridges death by creating a link between a living and a dead person. In terms of imitation, it is the expression of an individual's striving for a model ; in relations of friendship, age-class members, and blood brothers, it complements the notions of equality and freedom in producing closeness between two or more « different » individuals in a highly valued relationship.
