Description
In Borku, northern Chad, the vast palm grove and its inhabitants are interdependent. Human intervention accounts for the aspect of the grove as well as the varieties of trees planted there. In turn, human life is possible in this desert area thanks to the date palms, which protect people and gardens from the sun's intense heat, and thanks to palm fences, which shield from violent winds. Dates are the major source of wealth and of transactions. All parts of the tree are used for a wide range of purposes, especially in housing. Rights to palm trees and their crop characterize the Daza area, to which Borku belongs.
