Description
External trade of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe with countries of the European Community, EFTA and the Mediterranean basin.
This article begins with a look at the nature and development, in the period 1970- 1992, of the trade of each of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe with the twelve countries of the EEC, with the five principal member countries of EFTA - Austria, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland - and six countries of the Mediterranean basin - Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey. This is followed by a table of the regional trade of each of the EEC countries, based on indices for the comparative rate of their bilateral trade. This table gives a somewhat different picture of the trade in question from that afforded by a study of the individual trade figures for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. In conclusion, an effort is made to show how the special features of geographical, historical and indeed cultural proximity which influence the trade of these countries with their natural partners are taken into account in economic literature. In our case, it is done through the presentation of weighting models applied to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. These models show that there exists a growth potential for trade between Western and Eastern Europe, which has for a long time been hampered by the system of the planned economy.
