Printed in Ireland Preface to the report on Preventing racism at the workplace
The "Joint declaration on the prevention of racial discrimination and xenophobia and
promotion of equal treatment at the workplace" agreed by the European social partners at the
Social Dialogue Summit in Florence in October 1995 sets out a range of means that can
make a positive contribution towards preventing racial discrimination at the workplace.
The "Joint declaration" asks for the support of the European Foundation for the Improvement
of Living and Working Conditions in the follow-up of the Declaration. This publication wants
to be a first contribution to this process.
The publication which covers all European Union member states and Norway is the result of
putting together 16 national reports. This has been a formidable challenge that the author, Dr.
John Wrench, has been able to respond successfully. The reader has in its hands a well
written and structured report of the present developments and possible future strategic options
on preventing racism at work.
We are grateful to the authors of the national reports and the many commentators that
reviewed the national and the European reports. To them and to Dr. John Wrench our most
sincere gratitude.
