This collection of papers was orginially presented at a workshop in
Ruvaslahti i Finland, January 14-14 1994. The workshop was part of an
initiative of the management committee of COST A4, The social shaping of
technology, to produce a series of national reports on the state of art of
social shaping of technology-research in the participating countries. Most of
the papers have benefitted from the vibrant discoussions at Ruvaslathi and
also from the comments from Madelaine Akrich and Wiebe Bijker.
The workshop was arranged with support from COST and local
funding from Finland. The work on the reports has been supported by
national sources.
In editing this collection, we have revecieved valueable assistance from
Kari Heitman (secretarial assistance) and Bjørn Olav Listog (proof-reading).
Some support for this work has been given from the Norwegian Research
Council, programme on "Information Technology and Society".
We hope this collection will provide a useful overview of research on
the social shaping of technology in the participating countries. Good reading!
