CHAD 1989 : CHANGING TIMES. The Tubianas revisited Chad — especially its eastern provinces bordering the Sudan, where they had been doing fieldwork in the fifties — after having been kept outside for over thirty years. Staying among the Zaghawa and Tarna after a visit to the Kanem area they noticed that notwithstanding the years of drought, the ecosystems are recovering their former balance. The peasants and aristocrats have been vigourously at work, developing agriculture and growing vegetables and fruits for their own consumption and as cashcrops. Farmers associations (private, voluntary groups as near to co-operatives as is possible) are spreading quickly whenever advisers and managers are available. They channel information and technical knowledge everywhere. Production has increased but the surpluses cannot be easily sold since the traders are reluctant to drive their lorries to the villages to buy from the farmers, for the tracks are in bad repair and work on them generally comes too late. Social change has occurred at an accelerated pace and is still taking place in various fields : marriage, the status of women, the status of blacksmiths, shifts in political and administrative power, education for boys and girls, progress of islam and the use of the Arabic language, etc.
Des observations faites dans l'Est tchadien montrent la reconstitution en cours des écosystèmes après les années de sécheresse et analysent quelques tentatives fructueuses de développement en liaison avec la formation de groupements précoopératifs où circule l'innovation. Le point négatif est le mauvais état des routes et la difficulté d'écouler les produits. Les changements sociaux, observés à l'intérieur de sociétés étudiées précédemment, portent sur les modifications dans les stratégies de l'alliance, l'évolution de la condition féminine et de celle des gens de caste (forgerons), les déplacements du pouvoir, les progrès de la scolarisation, de l'arabisation et de l'islamisation.
