There continue to be many more men entrepreneurs running their own
businesses than women across the EU. Equally, there are many more
men than women managing businesses, irrespective of whether they
own them or not. Nor has there been much sign of either of these gaps
narrowing over recent years.
In 2005, self-employed women in industry and services in the
European Union as a whole accounted for around 8.6% of the total
number of women in work, half the proportion of self-employed men
(Fig. 1). (These figures exclude agriculture in which the self-employed
make up a large proportion of total employment – 47% in the case of
women and 57% in the case of men.)
