Social statistics must be flexible and capable of adjusting to developments if they are to make a
contribution to maintaining the social dialogue and provide the information required for the formulation
of social policy of the European Union. It was with this objective in mind that the Mondorf-les-Bains
Seminar was initiated by Eurostat in February 1994. The purpose was to facilitate a free and informal
discussion between high level statisticians from Members States, officials from the Commission and
representatives of university research departments, on the adjustments to be made to the European
social statistics strategy and programme.
The degree of harmonisation desirable for European social statistics and the ways and means to
achieve it, was, in every session of the Mondorf seminar, an important issue for discussion.
