The European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and
Working Conditions has promoted, within the framework of
its own working programme for 1982, a study aimed at
examining the role of the parties involved in the
introduction of new technologies.
This study represents a continuation of and a complement
to other studies which have been carried out or are still
being carried out on behalf of the Foundation on the subjects
of participation, on the one hand, and the impact of new
technologies, on the other.
The analysis has concentrated on case studies so as to
illustrate more clearly the workings of the participatory
processes as they occur in concrete form within the con
text of the companies in which technological innovation is
taking place. Particular attention has been paid to the
development of technological agreements, without, however,
neglecting the role of traditional collective bargaining
or of procedures and agreements of the informal type.
The study has been conducted in five countries by the
following research institutes, co-ordinated by the project
manager Vittorio Di Martino: - ζ -
Teknologisk Institut, Department for Industrial
Psychology - Tåstrup (Denmark);
University of Aston, Technology Policy Unit - Birmingham
(Great Britain).
Technische Universität Berlin, Institut für Psychologie
(Federal Republic of Germany).
Irish Productivity Centre (IPC) - Dublin (Ireland);
Istituto di Studi sulle Relazioni Industriali e di
Lavoro (ISRIL) - Rome (Italy).
A summary report prepared by P. Cressey of the Centre for
Research in Industrial Democracy and Participation of the
University of Glasgow completes the national studies.
The results of this study have been assessed by the
government, business and trade union representatives
during a seminar which took place in Dublin on 15 and 16
November 1984.
