Description
Urban Landscape and Social Différenciation in Abidjan.
The growth of Abidjan has brought about diversification in social strata and they are complex links between the Government and the different social groups. Until the early eighties, while favouring the creation of ground-rents, the governmental policy served the emergence of an urban bourgeoisie and, as a consequence, the boom of the high standing building sector (but also the development of shanty towns!). At present, with the economic recession and the slackening of the city growth, the authorities are helping the middle class access to property. That is why the urban landscape has found a new balance with the building of housing estates for low-income dwellers and the revitalization of traditional housing.
