Statutes 1001.64 Page: Page 1 of 2 GENERAL STATEMENT Broward College (the “College”) supports student publications, broadcast, and other student media as a valuable aid in establishing and maintaining an atmosphere of responsible discussion and providing a forum for student opinion and intellectual exploration. The College shall insure free and responsible journalism and neither censor nor approve content in advance. THE POLICY AND THE STUDENT All College-sponsored and financed student media shall explicitly state that the opinions expressed are those of the writers and do not necessarily reflect those of the College. Student writers and editors must take steps to avoid libel, indecency, violations of privacy laws in compliance with State and federal rules, undocumented allegations, attacks on personal integrity, and the techniques of harassment and innuendo. Students found by a court of law to have violated the law may be held personally responsible by the injured party. The College is not responsible or liable for student media communication. THE POLICY AND THE FACULTY AND STAFF The adviser of any student-produced media shall have the right to accept or reject any advertising copy and related art. A Student Media Advisory Council shall be established to support the mission of student publications and to enhance positive community participation in student publication efforts, specifically in the areas of: 1.Serving as a liaison between student publications and other parts of the College 2.Enhancing Collegewide support for student publications 3.Reviewing advisersselection of editors The Student Media Advisory Council shall not exercise editorial control over student publications at the College. IMPLEMENTATION AND OVERSIGHT The Associate Vice President for Student Development Services, under the direction of the Vice President for Student Affairs is responsible for the implementation and oversight of policy compliance.Students who wish to grieve a decision of a student media adviser may appeal in writing to the Associate Vice President for Student Development Services within 5 business days of the decision.The Associate Vice President will consider the appeal and render a decision within 5 business day after receiving the request from the student. Statutes1001.64Pa e: Page2 of 2 If the student is not satisfied with the response of the Associate Vice President, he/she may appeal in writing to the Vice President for Student Affairs within 5 business days after the decision is rendered by the Associate Vice President.The Vice President for Student Affairs will render a decision within 5 business days after receiving the request from the student.The decision of the Vice President for Student Affairs shall be final. VIOLATION OF POLICY Students who violate this policy may be suspended from participation from student media, lose their student media scholarship, and may be subject to discipline through the College Student Code of Conduct. DEFINITIONS Student Media  refers to print, broadcast, electronic, or other media that are primarily produced by College students and funded whole or in part by the College.
