VCU Experimental Protocol - Turf Grasses -2010 Season DOCVAT/GAZ/PROTO/003/IND3
1. Goal of the Experimentation
The Trial network of CTPS (Permanent Technical Committee for breeding) is managed and
placed under the control of GEVES. It has for object the testing of the Value for Cultivation
and Use (VCU) of new candidate varieties presented for registration to the Official
Catalogue.
The object of the present protocol is to describe the experimental procedures used in the
framework of the trial of the Value for Cultivation and Use (VCU) for the study of the turf
grass varieties.

The aim of the trials is to evaluate the behaviour of these varieties in comparison with control
varieties selected for their “agronomic” value and sales. Every year, the control varieties are
chosen by the “Fodder crop and Turf” section of CTPS. The trials last three years.

At the end of the 3-year study, varieties whose value is judged to be satisfactory, in
comparison with the check varieties, are admitted for VCU.

The GEVES trials network comprises locations in France and in other European countries
(see the list of locations in annex 2). It gathers trials conducted at experimental stations of
Institutes for Agricultural Research or Offices for varieties registration, at private plant
breeding stations, and at agricultural schools. The species concerned are listed in annex 3.
2. General Experimental Principles
2.1 Enrolment Contract for the CTPS GEVES Trials Network

Within the CTPS experimental network, all plant material comprising the varieties under trial
supplied to trial hosts is subject to restricted use and conditions of confidentiality.

An enrolment contract is provided by GEVES which must be signed by all trial
hosts/establishments taking part in the GEVES Trials Network and is binding with respect to
the procedures stipulated therein (annex 1).

The contract remains in force for the entire period during which the trial host takes part in the
GEVES Trials Network irrespective of the species under study. In the event of a change of
name, or of a merger of the establishment concerned, the contract (annex 1) will be renewed
and signed.

NB: the terms of the enrolment contract can be included in a more general contract
which deals with other aspects. In such a case, there might be no need to sign the
model enrolment contract.

2.2 Receipt of seeds for trials

The seed management department of GEVES receives, packages and dispatches to trial
hosts the seed lots that are grouped according to trials (GEVES Magneraud, BP 52 - 17700
SURGERES France - Contact: Xavier De LAFFOREST - Phone + 33 546 68 30 89 or +33
546 68 30 26).
At each location, the trial host receives a sample in a bag labelled with the name of the
species and the variety, the number of the cultivar, and the trial series.

The quantity of seed supplied for each variety varies with the species:

Perennial Ryegrass Lolium perenne L. 200 grams (400 grams

A traceability form is included in the seed kits. The form must be returned to GEVES
Magneraud, if an anomaly is observed.

2.3 Variety list conformity

The lists of varieties are composed of new candidate varieties in study for VCU and of check
varieties defined annually. The lists of varieties are identical for the whole trial network
concerned.

DOCVAT/GAZ/PROTO/003/IND3
The lists of varieties are enclosed in the seed kits dispatched by GEVES. The lists are
validated by the VCU trials network manager (“GRES” according to the French acronym)
who will contact the trial hosts if necessary.
On reception, the trial hosts should ensure that the batches of seeds they receive
match the list or lists included in the experimental protocol.
In the case of a discrepancy, the trial host should contact the network manager
without delay.
The addition or withdrawal of any variety is subject to the approval of the network
manager, solely authorised to modify the list of the varieties in trial.
Use of varieties under trial for border plots or additional plots in the trial is prohibited.

To complete a trial or for borders, aside from the controls supplied by GEVES, the trial host
shall only use registered varieties from the Europ
