Description
ABSTRACT Since the end of the Middle Pleistocene (isotopic stages 8 to 6), a clear trend towards laminar production exists in some lithic industries, in northern Europe. This trend expresses itself through non-Levallois direct débitage (Coquettes, Crayford, etc.) or through Levallois débitage (Etaples, Biache-Saint-Vaast) and seldom through an Upper Palaeolithic style débitage (Rissori). The latter really developed in the early stage of the last Glacial Period (isotopic stages 5 and 4) in northern France (Seclin, etc.), in Belgium (Rocourt) and in Germany (Rheindahlen, etc.). Some laminar Levallois industries (Abri du Maras) proved that the Upper Palaeolithic style of débitage does not supplant the other kinds of débitage. The study of laminar technology during the Middle Palaeolithic in northern Europe shows that the technological evolution is made up of a succession of periods of rupture and continuity. The diversity of its technological expressions demonstrates the absence of any chronological meaning of laminar débitage.
