Introductory Section

The Central Pennsylvania Oncology Group The Central Pennsylvania Oncology Group (Group), formed in 1972, is an association of 200 medical professionals at community hospitals and a single university center that serves cancer patients in a 34-county region of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Administrative functions of the Group are located at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center of the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The Groups efforts are concentrated into education and service programs for medical professionals and the public. The Group identifies as its primary mission the following goals:   •   To improve quality of cancer patient care.   •   To conduct and participate in studies on effectiveness of cancer treatment regimens with protocols developed and evaluated by the Group and by other organizations.   •   To improve communications and coordination of cancer treatment in central Pennsylvania.   •   To educate Group members and the professional medical community at large in newer aspects of cancer treatment.   •   To educate the general public in central Pennsylvania regarding cancer awareness, and prevention and early detection.   The 34-county area serves a population base of approximately 3.89 million people, or about 32 percent of the Commonwealths population. The Group is the primary source of region- wide educational and patient care programs and the principle way that cancer patients treated in the region can participate in studies of new cancer treatment regimens for this disease 1 .   During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2006, the Group received a non-preferred appropriation of $130,000 through Act 26A of 2005.
