What theses have been written in my department? UBC theses since 1983 are listed by department/school/faculty, degree, and date in the UBC Library online catalogue. Can I borrow non-UBC theses via ILL or must I purchase them? Canadian theses Theses Canada Portalprovides free access to 46,000 full text electronic Canadian theses and dissertations covering 1998-2002. In addition, most Canadian theses and dissertations are available on microfiche from the National Library of Canada via interlibrary loan (ILL). SearchTheses Canada Portalto verify your bibliographic citation prior to submitting your ILL request. U.S. theses Search the title inWorldCat. To connect, at the UBC Library home page click onIndexes & Databases (see top banner), then use theA-Z Listto findWorldCat.Most theses found there can be borrowed through ILL. If you cannot find the title onWorldCat, it is still worthwhile submitting a request to ILL. If the thesis is not available through ILL, you can usually purchase it fromProQuest Digital Dissertations.Prior to 1997, theses are generally available in a choice of formats: unbound paper, softbound paper, hardbound paper, microfilm, and microfiche. Prices vary according to the format. From 1997 onward, theses are also available in digital format. Foreign theses ILL will try to borrow either from the host institution or via the Center for Research Libraries (allow up to three months). Many European theses are difficult to borrow. If not available through ILL, sometimes there is an option to purchase. Prices vary – count on paying from $50 to $200.
