Based on the insight gained from grand uni cation theories, wedevelop a successful strategy to search for models resembling the mini-mal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM) in II6orbifold compacti cations. We nd about 200 MSSM candidates with thegauge group and the exact spectrum of the MSSM, and supersymmetricvacua below the compacti cation scale. We investigate orbifold compacti cations of the heterotic string, addres-
sing in detail their construction, classi cation and phenomenological po-
tential. Based on the insight gained from grand uni cation theories, we
