Description
The evolutionary tendencies of the cave-bear lineage (Ursus deningeri- > Ursus spelaeus) are now well known, particularly through dental study.
After 6 excavation field expeditions led by Michel Philippe (Museum d'Histoire Naturelle of Lyon), the Balme à Collomb site (Savoie) offers an abundant paleontological material for the study of the cave bear being carried out by the team «Paléontologie» of the Scientific Committee of the Balme à Collomb.
A first tentative dating has been done based on the dental study of M/l and P4/4. As for the fourth premolar teeth the morphodynamic method of G. Rabeder has been used in order to quantify the evolutionary degree through a morphodynamic index.
The results show that the cave bear of the Balme à Collomb is a typical Ursus spelaeus, but not at the end of its evolution, which lived during a period which can be situated approximately at 30,000 - 35,000 BP. These data match absolute datings which give a range between 24,160 BP and > 45,200 BP.
