PREFACE This study was commissioned under the 1981 programme of work as the first item of research on the subject of working time and leisure time, one of the two new topics under the living conditions section of the 1981-84 programme. Given that this was a completely new area to be tackled by the Foundation it was decided to undertake a European overview of existing research in the Member States on the interrelationships between working time and leisure time. The aim of the study was to define more clearly the scope and content of this topic which covers a vast area and is subject to considerable debate as to the dividing lines between these two main areas of time usage. This would assist the Foundation in determining the priorities for further research, such as filling identifiable gaps or testing in greater depth evidence which had already been highlighted by existing research.
