Its aim is to contribute to the achievement of a more just, harmonious and peaceful world, by studying the application of federalist principles to the organisation of society, states, and international relations. It was set up in 1945 by Federal Union, a movement created in Britain in the late 1930s to promote unity among the democratic nations under threat from the dictatorships as the successor to Federal Union's Research Institute, chaired by Sir William Beveridge. European Community studies From the beginning, the Trust followed with very close interest the development of the European Community. It pioneered studies, seminars and publications about the Coal and Steel Community; greatly intensified its educational work when the Six moved beyond this to the Treaties of Rome; and at the same time focussed on their implications for Britain.
