Daniel B. Reed integrates individual stories with the study of performance to understand the forces of diaspora and mobility in the lives of musicians, dancers, and mask performers originally from Côte d'Ivoire who now live in the United States. Through the lives of four Ivorian performers, Reed finds that dance and music, being transportable media, serve as effective ways to understand individual migrants in the world today. As members of an immigrant community who are geographically dispersed, these performers are unmoored from their place of origin and yet deeply engaged in presenting their symbolic roots to North American audiences. By looking at performance, Reed shows how translocation has led to transformations on stage, but he is also sensitive to how performance acts as a way to reinforce and maintain community. Abidjan USA provides a multifaceted view of community that is at once local, national, and international, and where identity is central, but transportable, fluid, and adaptable.

We must never forget that migrants, rather than simply being a statistic, are first of all persons who have names, faces, and individual stories .

Guide to Online Media Examples
Each audio, video, or still image example listed is associated with specific passages in this book and each has been assigned a unique persistent uniform resource locator, or PURL, which identifies it on the Ethnomusicology Multimedia website. 1 In the text, a PURL number in parentheses functions like a citation-for example, (PURL 3.1) means chapter 3 , first example.
To access all media, first create a free account on the website (which requires reading and electronically signing a license agreement) and sign in. There are two ways to access and play back the examples. Search Daniel B. Reed to be taken to a page with information about the book as well as a playlist of all media examples. To access a specific example, enter its six-digit PURL, which is located at the end of the full PURL address (see the next section). The page that comes up contains that example as well as a full playlist. In the electronic edition, simply click on the PURL address for each media example to be taken directly to it.
