Sioux Lookout at a Glance
The Hub of the North
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout, located in northwestern Ontario s well-known Sunset Country, boasts a rich history of Indigenous trapping and livelihood, fur trading posts, exploration, and railroad expansion that spans over a century. Every which way one looks, bright blue waterways and abundant forests that have attracted people for thousands of years stretch out as far as the eye can see. Europeans explored what is now known as Sioux Lookout as early as 1784, when the famous explorer, Edward Umfreville, led an expedition through the area under the direction of the North West Company.
Over the years, Sioux Lookout has experienced multiple bursts of economic energy and job creation opportunities, constantly adapting to changing economic and environmental conditions. This prosperity arose from various mining projects, a burgeoning aviation sector, the transcontinental railway main line divisional point, lumber harvesting and milling, forestry management, a residential school, and a variety of health care services.
Today, the town and municipality boast a diverse culture, a wide range of recreational activities, and comprehensive hospitality services-which include hotels, tourist camps, and restaurants as well as a new health care centre and patient hostel. Sioux Lookout s many home-based businesses, retail services, tourist operations, auto repair garages and service stations, bookstore, coffee shops, and general stores reflect the community s spirited sense of entrepreneurship. Recent additions include the new Centennial Centre, a refurbished Hudson s Bay Company/North West store, a Tim Horton s coffee shop, a brand new sandwich shop, and of late, a Giant Tiger store. Other established businesses such as Roy Lane Coffee, Ireland s Jewellery, the Forest Inn and Conference Centre, and many local financial institutions continue to stand firm and proud in their unremitting contribution to community success.
First Nations Tribal Councils, Education and Health Authorities as well as the Tikinagan Child and Family Services and nearby Lac Seul First Nation are now partners contributing to the vibrancy of the local community.

Opening of the Sioux Lookout Post Office, April 13, 1938. Sioux Lookout Community Museum collection.

Sioux Lookout s motto designates the municipality as the Hub of the North, a nod to its significant location and role as a transportation interchange. Indeed, it has, over the years, transitioned from being a waterway hub to an important divisional point for a national railway, and is now home to one of the busiest airports in Ontario. Its stunning logo features the wonderful lakes and trees of this land known fondly as Sunset Country, and consolidates the positive image and values of the community.
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout, as the trading centre of northwestern Ontario, is a diverse jewel that passionately pursues a culture of customer service excellence in a fiscally and socially sustainable manner.
