The book comprises 500 questions divided into 20 tests of 25 questions. Each test includes a multiple choice answer sheet. The questions cover the types of problems found in all verbal reasoning tests.

In completing the tests, the focus should be on consolidating the best methods for approaching questions in verbal reasoning tests. The methods have been comprehensively covered in theAnthemHow to Do 11+ and 12+ Verbal Reasoning: Technique and Practicebook. Whilst in the final analysis timing is vital, at this stage knowledge of and familiarity with methods is of greater importance. Nevertheless, 15–20 minutes for each test would be an acceptable time allocation, and achieving a score of 20 correct answers an acceptable level of attainment.

Once the exercises are completed, then the next stage will be to tackle complete papers of 80 questions in 50 minutes. These complete papers are to be found inAnthem Test Papers in 11+ and 12+ Verbal Reasoning Books.

When answering the questions in the 20 tests, it is useful to make constant reference to the answer sheet. For example, in questions covering letter series, number series, number substitution and number relationships, if your answer is not one of those offered on the answer sheet, then obviously you need to check your workings. For instance, in working out codes, it might only be necessary to work out two or three letters rather than the whole word. Naturally, with more practice, a more effective use of the answer sheet can be achieved.
