GENERAL TIPS FOR MATHS
GENERAL TIPS FOR MATHS

1.   Some people like to work on the questions they find most difficult first. Some people prefer to leave the hard questions to last. Pick a way that you feel comfortable with and use it throughout your Maths tests.
2.   Accuracy is key. You need to remain as accurate as possible to ensure successful marks. That’s why it is important to fully comprehend the questions and understand what is being asked. Most people find it difficult to finish all of the questions. These tests are designed to measure your level of accuracy against the speed at which you progress. Never sacrifice quality for quantity.
3.   Practice makes perfect. This is why we have provided you with lots of sample questions for you to work through. The more you practice these tests, the more likely you are to feel comfortable and confident with these types of questions.
4.   Make sure you brush up on the basics of maths. This includes multiplication, division, ratios, fractions, percentages, areas, mean, modes, median and range. You will face multiple questions that relate to the list above, so it is important that you have fully grasped these types of questions.
5.   Work on your weakest areas first. Whilst undergoing preparation, we recommend that you start off by practising questions that you are not so confident with. It’s important to ensure that you are well rounded in all areas of the mathematical assessment.
6.   The examples given to you at the beginning of this guide are a great way for you to become familiar with the testing questions. These examples also provide key tips that you can use throughout this guide and in your assessment, to improve your knowledge and skills in maths.
7.   If you are unsure about the answers, make sure you use our detailed explanations to understand how you get to the correct answer. Remember, knowing where you went wrong is just as important as getting the questions correct. You need to understand how the answer can be reached. Try practising the question again after reading the answers and explanations to ensure that you know where you went wrong.
8.   Check out our free online psychometric testing and sample questions to ensure you are fully prepared for your Maths tests.

EXAMPLE QUESTIONS FOR MATHS

Adding Fractions

Crossbow Method:
The CROSS looks like a multiplication sign and it tells you which numbers to multiply together.
One arm is saying ‘multiply the 5 by the 5’, and the other arm is saying ‘multiply the 7 by the 3’.
The BOW says ‘multiply the 2 numbers I am pointing at’. That is 7 times 5.
The answer is 35 and it goes underneath the line in the answer.

Subtracting Fractions

To subtract fractions, the method is exactly the same. The only difference is, you minus the two numbers forming the top of the fraction, as opposed to adding them.

Multiplying Fractions

Arrow Method:
Multiplying fractions is easy. Draw two arrows through the two top numbers and the two bottom numbers (as shown above) and then multiply – simple!
Sometimes the fraction can be simplified, but in the above example, the answer is already in its simplest form.
Drawing the arrows is just to help you remember which numbers to multiply together. Once you have mastered this knowledge, try doing it without the arrows.
