Let’s look at some of the creatures who share this Earth with us, but live in places where we can’t live. We may never see these creatures outside of books— and we might never want to meet some of them in real life!






The deep ocean
H umans live mostly on the land. We make use of the sea, for traveling and fishing, but we normally stay at or near the top of the oceans.









A s you go deeper in the ocean, the water pressure increases and less and less light filters down from above. You very quickly move below a region where people can survive or find their way about.
Below that surface layer, though, there is a lot of life in the ocean! We are still finding out what might be down there.






A lot of these creatures look weird and monstrous, but very few are dangerous to humans. What is dangerous to us is where they live: the water pressure at the bottom of the ocean is so powerful it would flatten you like a pancake in no time. It’s amazing these creatures can survive at all!
