S ometimes Gordon and Henry slept in James’ shed. James would talk about engines who got stuck in tunnels and on hills.
“You talk too much, little James,” Gordon said. “I have better things to think about. I’m the only one who can pull the Express. When I’m not there, they need two engines!”
Gordon continued, “I’ve pulled Expresses for years. I’ve never lost my way!”
He forgot that it’s the Signalman who makes sure the engines run on the right lines.
The next morning, Gordon woke up sleepy James.
“What are you doing today?” he asked. “Just odd jobs?”
James yawned.
“Run along and get my coaches,” said Gordon. “It’s time for the Express. Don’t be late!”
