Description

Join Lily, a young African gorilla on the adventure of a lifetime. She sets out to "rescue" her cousin Gil from a big city Zoo and learns the lessons of a lifetime along the way.
Is a zoo a place of refuge and learning? Are zoo animals ambassadors of their species? Join Lily, a Western lowland gorilla, as she embarks on an adventure of a lifetime and explores these questions. You may be surprised at what she learns and who helps her along the way.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Early manuscript readers are invaluable in any project, and this, certainly, was no exception. I am so grateful to have had an amazing group of readers: Barbara Marino; Kathleen Coolidge, Robin Ray; Broadway veteran Ron Schwinn; Harumbe defender, Dominic Marino; master of brevity, Dick Kuehn; and two of the smartest ten year olds I’ve ever met, Wyatt Lupo and Harry Aguilera.

A very special thank you to Miriam Stoddard whose original artwork brought Lily and Gil to life.

As always, a special thank you to my husband, Harris Baseman.
FOREWORD
I am fortunate in my role as a Zoo Director to see so many people who, each in their own way, dedicate their lives to the conservation of animals and ultimately, to the conservation of human beings too. Whether they take care of animals in our charge, educate visitors to the zoo about these wonderful animals and their habitats or work as conservation biologists in the animals’ natural habitats, each individual is committed to preserving these animals and their habitats. I also get to meet so many people who don’t work at a zoo or with animals, but they too are working hard on behalf of our shared future. People like Peggy Baseman, who, with their own gifts and skills make a difference.

Peggy’s book not so Silly Lily, is a wonderful, whimsical adventure with important messages about fostering respect for all living creatures, protecting wild habitats and the importance of family.

Natural habitats all around the world are shrinking and becoming isolated due to human activities. This trend is due to human need, greed and sometimes simply a lack of understanding.
This book helps plant the seeds of understanding and individual responsibility to take action in young people and perhaps those adults who read to, or along with, their children.
While gorillas do not speak English, they certainly do communicate in their own ways. They are not very different than people in so many ways. Lily and Gil, the gorilla protagonists in this story, both display great courage and self-sacrifice on behalf of their kin. From what I have seen in working with gorillas over the past 30+ years, this is accurate. I have seen gorillas display great bravery on behalf of their friends. Peggy’s description of Gil, majestically surveying his habitat and the visitors to it, reminds me of our own gorilla, Little Joe, who is not so little but truly magnificent. His nonverbal communications as a leader are amazingly clear.

Saving places for all the creatures that share our planet requires dedication and determination. We need young people like the character Evelyn and her grandmother, Mrs. Plushbottom, who after understanding the nature and magnitude of the problem, will stop at nothing to save our planet.

I have great respect for Peggy’s remarkable insights in writing this book and I am confident that through education and shared inspiration we can care for our planet, preserve the natural treasures we share it with and pass them on to future generations.
