U p high in the big blue sky flew a bird of the bluest blue named Kikoman. His favorite thing he loved doing was to speak to humans! He was quite the chatterbox, that bird. Always tweeting, chirping, and making noise! Kikoman was an unusual bird but very friendly.
In the park where Kikoman lived, there were always children playing. Kikoman would land and hop to and fro! Some of the children would sometimes be excited to see him, and they would point and chase him while he fluttered about.
Kikoman had multicolored feathers and a beautiful blue plumage! He was a most beautiful bird that all the children of the park admired. He made many friends, and among them were two brothers, Joshua and Elijah. These two inquisitive brothers were always asking questions. They loved to know what was in Kikoman’s bird brain.
One day, the brothers came out to play. They called out, “Kikoman! Come share with us your secrets!”
Kikoman, perched atop the branches of a tree, replied, “It’s a beautiful day to play with friends.”
“Oh, Kiko! It’s our birthday today! Eli and I are seven now, and we’ll have a party to celebrate!” said Joshua.

Meet Kikoman

1

“A lucky age to be!” Kiko said chirpily. “What will you wish for as a present?”
“I haven’t thought about it quite yet,” Joshua said. “Elijah! Why don’t you suggest something I should have for my birthday?”
“I know you love going to the park with me,” said Elijah. “Why don’t we ask for a kite?”
“Eli! What a wonderful idea. Let’s ask Mom and Dad for one when we’re done playing!”
“Oh, Joshua, that would be so much fun! Let’s share the kite and make it blue!”
But there was a small problem. Joshua didn’t like the color blue very much. He much preferred the color red. Elijah, on the other hand, loved blue.
“Oh, dear Eli, I don’t think I could ask for a blue kite. Why don’t we have a red one?”
Red or blue? Both brothers enjoyed different things! They loved playing together and sharing, but they didn’t know what color the kite they should ask for!
“Josh, you know I love blue, and I’ll bet Kiko does too!”
Kikoman hopped across the branch, twitching his neck just like birds do. He thought carefully about what they could do.
“Oh, I don’t know, Eli. Some colors are nice, but we all should be allowed to choose!”
“But, Kiko, say it should be blue, and Josh will follow too!” urged Elijah.
“No, Kiko! I would rather have a red kite. We’ve got enough blue as it is! The sky’s blue, and you are too!” said Joshua.

Kikoman didn’t want to see the brothers argue about what color the kite should be. The brothers began listing out all the different reasons for why their kite should be the color they preferred!
“Well, Kiko’s blue, and he flies well. A blue kite would fly better!” said Elijah.
“I saw a red airplane in the sky, and it flew higher and faster than Kiko does!” replied Joshua.
“Oh, but kites aren’t the same as airplanes.”
“Are too!”
“Are not!”
“They are too! They’re both flying!”
“Well, Kiko’s not a kite or a plane, and they’ve got different names!”
“But they all fly!”
“And they’ve all got different colors!”
“Not if I ask Mom for a blue kite!”
“You won’t!”
Kikoman was thinking all the while, and the brothers were about to get cross with each other! Kiko interrupted them and spoke. “One kite for the both of you?”

asked Kikoman. “Why not ask for two?”
“Two children, two presents! That’s the rule!” continued the blue bird, excited to have an answer.
“Oh, Kiko, you always know what to say!” said Elijah happily.
“Red or blue, now both of us can have one too!” added Joshua.
“Before you go, children, there’s another reason why we ought to have two!” said Kikoman.
“What’s that?”
“Because today is two s-day!” the bird chirped.
“Oh, Kiko, you’re so funny, but if that were true, I wish it were Sunday!” said Elijah.
“Why’s that?”
Joshua and Elijah looked at each other and grinned. They knew exactly what the other was thinking.
“Oh, come on. Explain it to me then!” said Kikoman, hopping excitedly on his branch.
“Oh, well, if it were Sunday, we could have asked for seven kites!” laughed Joshua.
“Well, seven doesn’t split evenly with two!” said Kikoman.
“So we would give the last one to you!” said Elijah.
